To add authenticity to Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant´s Flavours of Shanghai promotion, One World Hotel invited four chefs from The Eton Hotel Shanghai to showcase authentic Shanghainese dishes.
Shanghainese cuisine is known for its rich and sweet flavours and the chefs have prepared several ala carte dishes, including four set menus, to showcase the flavours.
At a recent media preview, we were served with one of the four set menus, which included a nine-course meal.
We started out with the Three Shanghai Style Appetiser, which consisted of Deep Fried Prawn ´Shanghai´ Style, Preserved Bean Curd with Peanuts and Black Fungus and Golden Straw Mushroom with Sliced Carrot and Cucumber.
The cold appetisers were followed by the Braised Fish Head Soup with Preserved Vegetable in Claypot.
The Sauteed Shrimp with Egg White was next. As the name suggests, we could just taste a hint of egg in this dish but it wasn´t overpowering at all.
The dish that we liked the best came after the shrimp, which was Deep-Fried Mandarin Fish with Sweet and Sour Sauce. This dish nicely balanced the sweet and sourness together, leaving us wanting more, yet keeping in mind that there were five other dishes to be presented!
A couple of sauteed dishes came next -- the Sauteed Mushroom with Chicken and Shrimp, followed by another one of our favourites -- Sauteed Shredded Beef with Honey Bean. The beef was so soft and tender that it almost melted in our mouth.
After the mouth-watering Sauteed Shredded Beef, we were a bit disappointed with the next course -- Fried Noodles with Beef and Vegetable, which we thought tasted a bit bland.
However, the dessert made up for it -- Sweet Scented Osmanthus Rice Cake, which was quite sticky and chewy and tasted of herbal tea.
And to end it all, we were presented with a platter of fruit.
This set menu has a price of RM380++ for a table of four. There are also three other set menus available, priced from RM300++ to RM680++.
The Flavours of Shanghai Promotion will be available until 2 July. Besides the set menus, an ala carte menu is also available for lunch and dinner.
